OFFICIAL GAME GUIDE
“We shall defend our island, whatever the cost
may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall
fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the
fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender!”—Winston Churchill,
Prime Minister, Great Britain (1874–1965)
from crouching to standing). Finally, press the Prone
button to go immediately to the prone position. You can
move and strafe while in either position (slowly).
Crouching makes you harder to hit than when you are
simply standing around (enemies take a second or two
longer to aim at you, giving you time to shoot back). You
can move slowly while crouching, which allows you to stay
low and avoid detection when exploring enemy territory.
Crouching also makes most cover more effective because
crates and other obstructions are rarely as tall as you are.
Remember to stand when running though, or you’ll be an
easy, slow-moving target.
Before you start your sorties, learn the basics of combat
survival. Then consult the “Weapons” chapter for details
on all single-player ordnance. A complete walkthrough is
provided, along with detailed information on the multi-
player modes.
NOTE
If you need to go even
lower than a crouch, go
prone. You’re very hard to
see (and aim at) when prone,
but it also greatly reduces
your movement speed. Most
of the time, simply
crouching is enough.
This guide refers to the name of each maneuver or
button press, rather than the button itself, as you can
configure your controller in a number of ways. Consult
the game manual for these rudimentary elements,
then read on.
Combat: The Basics
Movement
Running
When moving around while
standing, you run at full
speed. This is dangerous
when enemies are close, so
it’s better to crouch. Run
only when traversing an
already cleared area, or when
quickly heading to cover in
the middle of a firefight. Use a fast-firing machine gun or
clip-loaded weapon (such as the Thompson SMG),
allowing you to immediately respond to enemy fire.
You can also line up a shot
before you take it, by peering
(see below) and then looking
out from behind cover. Line
up your shot so your target
reticle is aiming at the
enemy’s head, keep your
position but move back into
cover, then peer out again and fire.
TIP
Crouching when moving up stairs allows you to reach
a higher level before your head appears. Again, this
enables you to take out enemies more proficiently.
Crouching when moving down stairs also has benefits,
as you gain the same advantages. Roll a grenade over a
stairwell without being seen to take out enemies that
normally could pose a serious threat of ambush.
Unless you’re certain you’ve cleared an area, it’s best
to stay crouched at all times.
Crouching/Prone
To go from standing to
crouching, press the Crouch
button once. If you press the
button again while
crouched, you go prone.
Pressing the Jump button
moves you up by one degree
(from prone to crouching or

TRAINING
Cover
Staying behind cover means
staying alive. Learning to
find and use cover in the
field is very important.
When you’re darting around
a dockyard or heading across
desert ruins, stationary and
sturdy object makes good cover.
Often, your own men seek out the best cover, so follow them.
Weapons
Shooting
You can’t run around, firing
wildly, and expect to get
much done. Not only is it
important to aim carefully,
it’s also essential to know
how your weapon fires and
how long it takes to chamber
a new round. Moving greatly
reduces your accuracy, so stay still, crouch, and squeeze off
each shot like it was your last. Use short controlled bursts
to maintain ammunition with a fast-firing weapon; learn
the statistics of each weapon in the next chapter.
Aiming
Hold the Aim button to change
your view to your gun’s sights
(or scope). Aiming allows
you to land a more precise
shot, and it gives you a
short-range zoom. You move
very slowly while aiming, so
take your shot quickly unless
you’re safely covered. You can slide a short distance; this is
useful for peering out from cover to assess a situation.
The first screen shows you
taking cover, and the second
shows you peering from
cover (usually after using the
Aim button). If you’re below
the top cover, you can peer
above or around it. This is
essential for taking out
enemies by lining their heads up with your target, darting
back so you aren’t struck, then quickly dispatching them.
Strafing
TIP
Strafing is also called sidestepping because you face the same
direction but move left or right. This allows you to contin-
uously look (or fire at) the same target. Circle-strafing is
the technique of moving around your foe (or target) rather
than from side to side. Strafing is vital for taking evasive
maneuvers, continuing to watch an area you’re interested
in securing, or dodging a foe’s fire or grenades.
Always aim for the head; you’ll achieve an instant one-hit kill.
Sniper Zoom
Jumping
This allows you to leap up in the air for a moment, or to
stand up after a crouch. Use the Jump button to leap over
low walls and fences, or hop out of trenches.
Once you’re aiming with a sniper rifle with a scope (such
as the Enfield), increase or decrease your zoom by using
W
or
X
on your controller. This is essential when attacking
enemies at extreme range, usually in heavy cover or behind
a machine-gun nest. Take careful aim at the head and drop
entire squads without them knowing, but remember that
you’re completely blind peripherally. Move your sights
slower the more zoomed in you are.
TIP
Pull your sights in and out between shots to quickly
line up new targets.

OFFICIAL GAME GUIDE
Reloading
Keep your gun fully loaded
whenever possible. Running
out of bullets in the thick of
battle can mean a gruesome
end for Lt. Holt. Any time
you’re free from enemy fire,
reload your gun, even if
you’ve fired only a few bullets.
This is especially true with guns that are slow to reload.
Enemy Weapons
When you take down an
enemy soldier, he often
drops his weapon. Weapons
are also available in caches
throughout the campaign. If
you approach the weapon,
you can switch it for your
current one by pressing the
Use button. If you’re happy with your current weapon (and
have plenty of ammo), then hang onto it. However, if you
wish you had a rifle instead of a submachine gun, grab that
gun and use the enemy’s weapon against him. Follow the
walkthrough’s guidance to help you decide.
Melee Strikes
It is never wise to engage
the enemy with the butt of
your rifle or other weapon,
so conserve your ordnance.
If you do run out of
ammunition, you can charge
and perform a melee strike.
You can’t reload and melee
strike at the same time. Melee strikes are dangerous and
not recommended, but usually the only way to fight
during a battle where you’re reloading a weapon slowly.
The Grenade Toss
TIP
Look up as you throw, as grenade tossing is based on
trajectory, not your target reticle.Try to throw a grenade
so it lands four seconds ahead of an enemy and explodes
as he moves onto it or tries to kick it away. As long as
you’re behind cover, flushing out enemies is an excellent
use of grenades, especially in tight spaces.
CAUTION
Watch out! German soldiers sometimes kick grenades
back at you. Fire on them if you spot this.
The Action Button
During the campaign,
you’re asked to achieve a
wide variety of tasks, from
placing charges to picking
up weapons, kicking live
grenades away, or pushing
plungers or levers. Do this
with the Action button
when instructed by the screen prompt.
Change Weapon
Pressing this button switches between your two armaments
(but not grenades). Be sure you discard the weapon you
aren’t using when you pick up another, and carry weapons
that offer two types of firing opportunities (such as a slow-
but-accurate sniper rifle for long-range strikes, and a
shotgun for inaccurate close combat).
Other Information
Pause and Start
Switch to grenades and throw them. The longer you hold the
button, the farther you throw. Drop the grenade at your feet
(useful if you’re above a foe) by tapping the button. Remember
you can “cook” a grenade, allowing it to explode as it
lands, but usually, you’ll want to use the four-second fuse.
Pausing the game to quickly view an in-game map, along
with the current objectives; use this if you’re unsure of
your next actions. The menu allows you to read objectives
and change numerous options.
Your Squad
On every mission, you travel (and fight) with a squad.
These teammates (almost always three of them) are often
