Introduction
ItÓs been a long time since gamers have seen an entry in the classic
Mega Man series. Capcom released its most recent (and assumedly
final) offering way back in February of 1997 in the form of Mega Man 8.
This 32-bit PlayStation game was typically looked down upon by
gamers, and the series appeared to be all but abandoned thereafter in
lieu of newer Mega Man-related spinoffs.
But flash-forward to the summer of 2008. Rumors arise about an
upcoming Mega Man title, not in the Battle Network, Star Force or X
series, but in the classic Mega Man continuity, allegedly abandoned but
not so. Not only was Mega Man 9 coming, but Capcom made old-
school gamersÓ faces melt when they announced that it would be in its
8-bit NES form. ThatÓs right -- Capcom intended to release its first 8-bit
Mega Man game since the spring of 1994. And now, itÓs finally here.
Mega Man 9 plays in the same vein as Mega Man 2, and to many,
thatÓs going to come as a welcome surprise. But Mega Man 9 has
something that Mega Man 2 lacked comparatively, even on "Difficult"
mode -- endless challenges. Mega Man 9 is
hard
in ways that most
gamers of the new generation wonÓt even comprehend. ThatÓs not to
say the game isnÓt beatable, however, because it is. And thatÓs where
IGN Guides comes into play.
Do you need a rundown of Mega Man 9Ós fundamentals? Visit our
basics section. Our walkthrough will get you through every stage in the
game, from Galaxy ManÓs to Concrete ManÓs to Dr. WilyÓs Castle and everywhere in between. Our bosses section will help

Welcome to the Basics section of our Mega Man 9 guide. Here, all of the game's fundamentals will be covered in-depth.
Use the tab above to navigate between the three Basics subsections.
Mega Man 9, In A Nutshell
If youÓre familiar with 8-bit gaming in general, you may only need to browse this initial section of our Basics guide before
moving on to Advanced Tactics and Ten Tips. Mega Man veterans, especially those that have played any or all of six NES
titles, may be able to skip the Basics section in its entirety. But if you donÓt fall into one of these two categories, you should
certainly start here and move on to Advanced Tactics and Ten Tips
after
reading everything below.
Mega Man 9, like its eight predecessors, is a 2-D side-scroller. And like the first six games in the series, Mega Man 9 is an
8-bit NES-style title that plays just like the predecessors. More specifically, however, the gameplay mechanics are derived
directly from Mega Man and Mega Man 2. That is to say, the key features added by games released thereafter arenÓt
included in Mega Man 9 (such as Mega ManÓs ability to slide in Mega Man 3 or shoot charged shots from his arm cannon
in Mega Man 4). So, when one thinks of how Mega Man 9
specifically
plays, think Mega Man 2.
Playing through Mega Man 9 is simple enough in premise. Just like the previous eight games in the series (with the
exception of the original Mega Man title), you will choose to go through eight stages in any order that suits you. Using the
weapons earned from defeating the Robot Master (boss) at the end of each stage, you can find the weaknesses of his or
her fellow Robot Masters and exploit them. For instance, while you can kill Tornado Man with the Mega Buster, Mega
ManÓs default weapon, you will have a much easier time fighting and killing him if you first visit Plug ManÓs stage in order to
earn his weapon, which happens to be Tornado ManÓs weakness. Therefore, thereÓs a way to get through the Robot
MastersÓ stages to that the next Robot Master you will fight is weak to the last oneÓs weapon whom you killed.

Simple, right? Well, like we said,
in premise
it is. But when it comes down to it, getting through each stage and each Robot
Master is a challenge in itself. And when those eight stages are done, Dr. WilyÓs castle, consisting of the hardest stages
and bosses the game has to offer, is whatÓs waiting for you. But thatÓs where our walkthrough comes into play. For now,
keep reading to learn more about Mega Man 9Ós gameplay features.
Controlling Mega Man
Because of the fact that Mega Man 9 is an old-school 8-bit game, the controls are comparably simple to the gameÓs
presentation. There are really only four buttons that you need to worry about no matter which version of the game youÓre
playing, whether itÓs on the Wii, PlayStation3 or Xbox360. Since specific buttons will depend on which console youÓre on,
weÓll more generally refer to the buttons as Fire, Jump, Movement and Menu.
Fire
- The Fire button corresponds with the B button on an NES controller, and is how Mega Man attacks his various
robotic enemies. 99% of the time, youÓll find yourself equipped with Mega ManÓs primary weapon, his arm cannon
called the Mega Buster. This weapon shoots white pellet-like bullets, and three can "fit" on-screen at any given time
(so that no more can be fired until a bullet collides with an enemy or scrolls off-screen as a stray shot). This weapon is
effective against a vast majority of enemies in the game, and can even be used against Robot Masters and other boss
enemies. However, when it comes time to use one of the fallen Robot MastersÓ assimilated weapons, the Fire button
will be how itÓs used. Just remember to equip the weapon (more on that later!)
Jump
- The Jump button corresponds with the A button on an NES controller, and is pressed when Mega Man needs
to take to the air. Jumping is done with great regularity in Mega Man 9, and for myriad reasons. Mega Man needs to
jump at times to dodge enemy attacks or enemies themselves. HeÓll also have to jump to reach platforms above him,
or to dodge obstacles such as holes in the ground or ever-deadly spikes (both of which will kill Mega Man instantly).
One can jump and shoot simultaneously, however, which is a skill that should be efficiently learned as quickly as
possible.
Movement
- The way which Mega Man is moved will differ depending on which version of the game youÓre playing.
On an NES controller, the d-pad (directional pad) is how Mega Man was moved. And all three controllers for the three
platforms Mega Man 9 is available for have d-pads, which is how we recommend playing the game. If youÓre playing
on an Xbox360 or PlayStation3, however, you can also use the analog sticks on their respective controllers. Be
warned that the analog sticks simply donÓt give you the level of control a d-pad gives you in an old-school game such
as this, but for those who dislike using the d-pad, itÓs an option.
Menu
- Accessing the in-game menu is key in completing the game, since this is how Mega Man not only accesses
and equips his acquired weapons and Rush Adaptors, but itÓs also how acquired items are utilized as well. If you have
an E-Tank or M-Tank that needs using, for instance, accessing the menu is how you would do so (more on those
items later). Quickly navigating the in-game menu, doing so in an efficient manner, is what separates Mega Man
novices and intermediates from the experts. DonÓt overlook this point, especially if youÓre speed-running.

Rush, the Robotic Dog
Earlier in this initial Basics section, we mentioned that Mega Man 9 plays most like Mega Man 2. We mentioned that the
slide given to the series by Mega Man 3 and the super shot given to the series by Mega Man 4 werenÓt in Mega Man 9.
And this is true. But something that was in Mega Man 3 that
wasnÓt
in Mega Man 2 in the same form makes an important
appearance in Mega Man 9. That something is Rush, the robotic dog.
People whoÓve played Mega Man 2 might be confused by this. After all, Mega Man 2 had items that made Mega Man go
from blue to red, just like using Rush does, with purposes that are identical to RushÓs. But these were simply known as
items -- Item 1, 2 and 3 -- and werenÓt turned into Rush specifically until Mega Man 3.
What purpose does Rush serve? Well, Rush serves an extremely important purpose, though he only appears in two
different forms in this game (in Mega Man 3, for instance, there were three Rush Adaptors). The first form of Rush that you
can equip on Mega Man for utilization is the Rush Coil, which you will start the game with. This is "classic" Rush, with a
springboard coming out of his back. When deployed, simply jump on RushÓs back and Mega Man will fly into the air. You
can then use the d-pad to steer Mega Man to where you need to go, using this high jumping mechanism to reach out-of-
the-way areas that will hold such good as extra lives, Screws, E-Tanks and more!
Differing from previous Mega Man games is how more Rush Adaptors are earned. Usually, a specific Robot Master would
need to be defeated in order to free up a new Rush Adaptor that would be earned along with that Robot MasterÓs weapon.
This time around, Mega Man earns the only other Rush Adaptor in the game, Rush Jet, when heÓs defeated any five Robot
Masters. This means
any
five Robot Masters, once defeated, will allow the ever-useful Rush Jet to be placed into your
inventory.
Because of the fact that the Rush Jet is randomly acquired, the first eight stages of the game never really require its use.
But once you get into Dr. WilyÓs castle, youÓll find it incredibly useful and, at many points, absolutely necessary. The Rush
Jet allows Mega Man to use Rush as a floating platform that will propel slowly forward. You can mildly control its
movement up and down, but Rush will continuously go in the same direction in which he was deployed. Using this to cross
long chasms and spike-lined floors isnÓt only useful -- at times, itÓs an absolute must.
