Both protocols advertise VLAN configurations in a switched LAN.VTP domains and operationVTP advertises VLAN configurations in VTP domains. A switch can be located in only one VTP domain. Each switch ina VTP domain works in server, client, or transparent mode. A VTP server adds, deletes, modifies, and broadcastsVLAN configurations to all VTP clients. A VTP client receives and synchronizes its database with the VLANconfigurations advertised by the VTP server. A transparent switch does not participate in VTP. It forwards VTPmessages out on all trunk ports.By default, a VTP-capable switch operates in server mode and has no VTP domain configuration. It learns domainnames from VTP messages sent by other VTP switches.The VTP advertised VLAN configurations are saved in non-volatile random-access memory (NVRAM) and can survivea reboot.VTP pruningVTP pruning dynamically removes unused VLANs on a port. You can also manually remove unused VLANs on a port.VLAN pruning delivers these benefits:1. Reduces the size of a VLAN broadcast domain2. Decreases CPU load3. Simplifies Per-VLAN Spanning Tree topology calculationsFigure 1 shows a VTP-enabled LAN without VLAN pruning. You can encrypt VTP messages, but must ensure that all VTP switches in theVTP domain use the same password.Summary advertisementsA VTP switch sends summary advertisements to inform other VTP switches of its current VTP domain name and theconfiguration revision number. When a VTP switch receives a summary advertisement, it compares the VTP domainname with its own VTP domain name. If the name is different, the switch ignores the advertisement. If the name is thesame, the switch compares the configuration revision number with its own revision number. If the received revisionnumber is equal or lower, the switch ignores the advertisement.
